You may also have heard of the almost mythical Dive with Seashells mug, which features shell and coral patterns. This mug is a trial version of the familiar Dive mug, and only a batch of 10 pieces was made. Those mugs were given to employees at the Arabia factory. Later, the mug is known to have changed hands in 2021 for around €23,820 in a Swedish online auction.

So what explains the rapid increase in the value of Moomin mugs? Let’s take a moment to look at the chart below, which shows how the number of Moomin mugs developed between 1990 and 2026.

As the chart shows, new mugs have only been released annually since 2004. Since then, the pace of new mug releases has gradually accelerated, and the number of Moomin mugs in production at the same time has increased. There are currently more than 80 mugs in production, so it is no wonder that Moomin Arabia is opening new stores of its own in Europe.

The annual number of Teema-shaped Moomin mugs has also increased due to the production of larger 0.4-litre Moomin mugs, which began in 2021. These new, larger mugs have not replaced the traditional character mugs, seasonal mugs or special mugs. Instead, the 0.4-litre Moomin mugs have series of their own, such as the letter mugs, also known as alphabet mugs.

Over 190 Moomin mugs released

When all Teema-shaped Moomin mugs released by June 2026 are counted together, the total comes to an impressive 191 mugs. In addition, 2023 was an exceptionally fast-paced year, with twenty new Moomin mugs released. The production of Moomin mugs in Finland ended completely in 2016 when the Arabia factory closed, so all mugs are now made in Thailand. However, mugs have been produced in Thailand since the early 2000s.

Although fewer than twenty mugs were released in the 1990s, they do not quite reach the very top of the value scale despite their great popularity. The new 0.4-litre versions of the 1990s mugs do not have significant monetary value. The rarest and most valuable Moomin mug that was part of actual production is Fazer, released in 2004, of which only a numbered batch of 400 pieces was made.

Finding valuable Moomin mugs, just like other valuable collectibles, is often partly a matter of luck. Although consumer-to-consumer trade has moved increasingly to online marketplaces in recent years, many people still head to flea markets in the hope of making discoveries. The charm of flea markets often lies precisely in the possibility of finding something special: the seller may not be aware of the current market value of the items they are selling, which means that, at best, a valuable Moomin mug can be found at a very low price.

Although these often offer the best chances of finding valuable items, safety should not be forgotten: when buying more expensive products, it is always best to make the deal face to face if the seller is not already familiar to you.
