Most valuable Moomin mugs

Arabia released the first Moomin mugs in 1990. The mugs were based on Arabia’s Teema series of mugs designed by Kaj Franck. The Teema series is known for its combination of practicality, versatility, affordability and minimalist asethetic.

The popularity of the Moomin mug series surprised everyone, including Arabia, and certainly nobody at the time would have guessed the prices some mugs would fetch only a few years later, having become vintage collectibles.

What is the reason for the fast rise in value of Moomin mugs? Let’s take a moment to look at the graph below. This graph shows the development of Moomin mug production between 1990 and 2021.

As you can see, new mugs have appeared annually since 2004. Before 2004, new Moomin mugs were released irregularly. Since 2004, the number of published new mugs has gradually increased, and at the same time, the total number of Moomin mugs in production has also increased.

• The total number of Moomin mugs doubled between 2010 and 2020.
• In the 90s, only 18 new Moomin mugs were released.
• Since 2004 at least 3 new mugs have been released annually.

More than 120 Moomin mugs

From 1990 to 2022 Arabia have published 124 Moomin mugs in total – all based on Teema design. That is quite a huge number! The Moomin mugs were produced only in Finland until around 2005. Around 2005 the production started in Thailand and was gradually increased until 2016 when the production ended in Finland. After 2016 all mugs have been manufactured in Thailand.

Altough less than twenty mugs were released in the 90s, and despite their popularity amongst collectors, they are not the most valuable Moomin mugs. The two rarest and most valuable mugs with a very limited amount of produced items, are Fazer (400 pcs produced) and Moomintroll Daydreaming (2005 pcs produced).
